Why Calcium is crucial in Women’s Health

When thinking about women’s health, there is a dietary need to think about calcium intake for nutrition. One of the quickest sources is dairy food products and/or eating the right foods in quantity for proper dosage. Foods like broccoli, sardines, salmon, tofu, kale and calcium in liquids such as milk and organic juice have fortified calcium, but the reality is that not everyone consumes the right amount calcium due to selective eating.

Therefore, supplements is also a part of women’s nutrition program, but precaution should be considered depending on health history and medication prescription. Having said this, let’s get into why calcium is important. For starters, calcium is the most abundant mineral in the body, since about 99% is deposited into our bones and teeth. Calcium is absorbed and used in the body for development and maintenance of bone structure.

Calcium is also utilized by the body to help with healthy blood, ease insomnia, and helps regulate a good heartbeat. Moderate cases of calcium deficiency can lead to predispose symptoms such as cramps, joint pain, heart palpitations, increased cholesterol levels, slow pulse rates, brittle nails, and numbness of the arms and/or legs (those are just a few examples).

One particular area where calcium is crucial in women’s health is during transitions in health with menstruation, hormone health, perimenopause and menopause. Unfortunately, we do not focus enough education on these transitions of life relating to women’s health. So let's bring awareness here, women after menopause frequently absorb as little as 7% of calcium. Calcium is filtered through the blood and excreted by the urine and feces. Premenopausal women may need 1000 milligrams, and post menopause women may need 1500 milligrams (consult and discuss with your primary provider). As we age, the requirement can increase due to rate of absorption, but also less desire to eat food rich in calcium, such as sardines.

For women it’s important to consume adequate calcium to maintain strong bones, but also to regulate hormones throughout life transitions as mentioned above. As you continue to navigate your wellness journey its important to select wellness products that will support each phase. So make sure to do your research, ask questions, and follow up with your primary provider for a good quality plan of care.

A decision I made recently was to purchase a vitamin pack supplement   GNC Women‘s Whole Body Vitapak Program that included calcium in the vitamin, but also focused on other areas such as:

1. see husk for digestive health
2. cognitive & focus to manage everyday work and life task
3. blood flow and circulation to support blood vessel dilation
4. fish oil to promote whole body health
5. women's collagen to support healthy skin, hydration and elasticity
6. joint health to support health movement

The 7 GNC products play a vital role on how calcium is adequately observed and supported in the body. You might ask, how so? Absorption of calcium depends on other factor like adequate amount of vitamin D, digestive and blood flow circulation, exercise, physical and emotional stress. Areas that can be supported by the vitapak program to help improve women's whole body. Taking more than one vitamin is an adjustment, but the longevity is to sustain good overall health from head to toe.

Remember if you have questions about supplements due to health history or medication, consult with your primary care provider to see what the best plan of care that will support your wellness journey.
