Talking Herbs with Angelana Marie

My dream is to one day see OB and Gynecologist offices include fertility doulas, midwives, health coaches and women's health educators  that will provide holistic support services that can help women take their health into their own hands and help guide and  empower the divine female body. Obviously there is still a fine line of holistic vs western medicine, but I hope to one day see this blend come together for the greater good.

Today, I like to let you know about natural herbs and supplements that can help provide natural remedies for women's healing and wellness. And technically we can avoid pharmaceuticals all together by healing directly with earths natural plants. To be quite honest, when I am suffering from a health discomfort, (and with all due respect to the modern medicine) I am always looking  for alternative natural healing remedies, so my body can have an opportunity to heal itself naturally. And if it  fails (which is rare), I will then start navigating for good doctors who have experience and are open to holistic medicine.

Okay, back to the herbs, below is just a few herbs that can help with some particular symptoms relating to women's health:
  • Ginger cann be used for nausea and upset stomach
  • Peppermint can help with bloating and gas
  • Chast Tree Berry can help with mood swing and period related irratibility
  •  Red Rasberry Leaf can help with menstrual cramps and heavy periods
  • Cranberry can help with frequent UTI's (Urinary Tract Infection)

While I continue to navigate for natural remedies and services, I met Angelana Marie  (she/her/they/them) this year and she started her own healing journey in 2010. A tumultuous journey that forced her to do shadow work in order to restore balance within herself. Thous this is a constant daily practice, she has learned tools and ways to assist her on her journey. She lives with endometriosis and an auto immune condition that has not been properly diagnosed. Meditation, herbs, crystals and energy work have been the main tools along with breathwork and earthing which have reconnected herself to her truth Which is forever evolving!

She specializes in herbal medicine, crystal therapy, energy work, trigger point therapy, and fire cupping. The main purpose of her work is dismantling the patriarchy, racism, white supremacy, misogymy, colorism, ableism, and fat shaming, while uplifting and remiding queer, trans, black brown, disable folx, and the marginalized of their trught, magic, and power! Listen to Episode #47 to get to know Angelana's journey and how she discover herb medicine.

According to CDC, community health is a term used to describe the state of health and how easy or difficult it is to be healthy where people live, learn, work and play. The health of a community depends on the access to community resources such as healthy stores, wellness programs, community parks and much more. So as we strive each day to make a community healthy, I like to introduce you to a young entrepreneur couple who decided to open up a MAXA market in Barrio Logan.

The MAXA market was co-founded by Edgar and Gisel two Latinx enterprenuers who decided to take a leap to open up a small store that includes healthy Mexican snacks. Their mission is to provide the community with healthy alternative snacks as well as teach visitors and community members about the different products that exist beyond the traditional grocery store. MAXA team is one of many small groups in the community who work together to prevent disease and make healthy living options access in Barrio Logan.

Edometriosis with Karinee Lopez

According to womenshealth.gov, Endometriosis happens when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus (womb) grows outside of the uterus. It may affect more than 11% of American Women between 15 and 44. It is especially common among women in their 30s and 40s and may make it harder to get pregnant.

Endometriosis happens when the tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside of your uterus and on other areas in your body where it doesn't belong.

Most often, endometriosis is found on the: ovaries, fallopian tubes, tissues that hold the uterus in place and outer surface of the uterus.

Other sites for growths can include the vagina, cervix, vulva, bowel, bladder or rectum. Rarely endometriosis appears in other parts of the body, such as the lungs, brain and skin (womenshealth.gov)

Symptoms of endometriosis can vary from women to women and not all women  will experience the same painful symptoms, but a couple things to observe are the following:   pain during menstruation, painful sex, if your bleeding or spotting between menstruation cycles, painful bowel movements, digestive problems and infertility. If you are experiencing any of the following make an appointment with your medical provider to get a referral to a gynecologist specialist as well as  research for a good fertility doula and women's health nutritionist. Having a team of different experts can possibly increase your chances for learning how to cope with endometriosis and adapting a lifestyle to support your womb.

Another important thing to do is to start interviewing the women in your family to learn about what reproductive health conditions exist. Getting to know the women in your family such as  Mom, Sister, Aunt, Cousins, Abuela..etc. is an important factor of your reproductive health. The more you learn about the pre-existing conditions, the more you will become aware if you at risk or not. Overall this exercise will help you learn to empower your knowledge in women's health and family history.

Now, with that said, I would like to take a moment to introduce Karinee Lopez, she is a holistic endometriosis health educator. And after years of battling painful endometriosis symptoms, infertility, countless surgeries, hormone therapy, and suicidal thoughts. Karinee decided to take control of the avalanche life she was living to find a different approach to her diagnosis. Because of her journey, she is now dedicated to helping other women reclaim their health and power back from endometriosis.

Is Having Good Posture Important?

I'll confess upfront that I have the worst sitting and sleeping posture. And there are times like I feel that I am twisted sleeping pretzel. This is actually really common for most of us and I'm a pretty sure your mother told you: sientate derecha, camina derichita sin jorobar la espalda, ayyy mira levanta el pecho (Sit up Straight! and Don't Slouch!).

Yes ladies, our bodies get super comfortable staying in postures that are not healthy for the spine and body. The sitting position is where most of us get in trouble with poor postural habits. And as one focuses on their daily activity for the day in front of the computer, we tend to protrude the head and neck forward. So it's only common for the body, thoracic and lumbar spine to round forward too. When this occurs to our bodies, the weight of head and upper body are no longer balance over our unique spinal column. Instead we start to feel discomfort, back pain, tense necks and upper and lower back  body discomfort. And before you know it,  we are creating our own little hunch back version. At this point it's important to be consciously aware of your body posture and reposition yourself to support your spinal column. If you must, get up and stretch, walk around and readjust your seat for ergonomic health.

On top of our body posture affecting our body movement, it also affects our moods and habits. Girlll... yes, everyday our body gives us signals about how we will end up feeling. Pay close attention to how your body is feeling inside and out. Just recently, I had to give myself a break from my own personal projects, social media and be more focus on what my body needed, "R..E..S..T"

Like most people, we could easily ignore the sign and symptoms, but what good will it do if we ignore our bodies. Instead listen to the body symptoms early to help prevent future injuries as we get older.

Remember this," body language is closely related to posture- the way we move our bodies affects how other see us as well as our own moods and habits." ~Belle Beth
