After a hard week with my health, I am just getting back into the groove of things and perhaps when the time is right, I will share my most recent health encounter. For now, I would like to share my Wanderlust experience. You see, three weekends ago there was a sport event that was going to take place at Liberty Station, San Diego called Wanderlust . I didn’t know what it was at first, but the add captured my attention when I was scrolling through Facebook’s homepage.

To get to know a bit more, wanderlust is about an amazing mindful triathlon experience to finding your true north. You get an opportunity to cultivate your best self in a day by doing a 5k, yoga and meditation, but it’s also an experience to building a healthier version of yourself.  The event will definitely inspire you to join forces with a complete stranger and motivate you to be a better version of yourself.
Here are my top three reasons why you should catch Wanderlust in your hometown:

1.       It offers a diverse experience because it involves a 5k, yoga and meditation. See quick details below:

a.     The 5k is fueled by Adidas, you can walk, run, skip whatever just make it to the finish line.

b.       90 minutes of yoga flow underscored by a DJ where you will find your own rhythm.

c.       30 minute meditation to relax your body and complete a mindful triathlon

2.       When you purchase your ticket, you will have an opportunity to sign up for additional classes like:

Yoga and Music Introduction,  AIReal Yoga, Essential Oils, Photography or Hooping

3.       You will meet amazing vendors such as:

Local artist and designers, food, Adidas clothing store and Ford's new eco-friendly car.

Chicas, before I forget, make sure to wear light and cool clothing for the event to avoid being over heated under the sun. Also, wear a good pair of running shoes with low socks and take some headphones, so you can listen to upbeat music to finish the 5k. Last, but not least take a pair of sandals to avoid your feet from getting sweaty and hot. I happen to take a pair of Teva sandals and it made my feet 10x more happy. Oh and don't...forget your sunblock!

Women's Fatigue

Have you been feeling down right fatigue lately?
I know I have and I am not sure why...
I mean I know on a good day I can catch a good 6-8 hours of sleep,
but that doesn't explain why my body feels like It's been run over twice by a bus

Worn out and weary, women across the country named fatigue among their top five health
concerns of 2010 in WebMD's annual year in health survery (the other four were period problems, "super foods" best for nutrition, thyroid conditions and sex and relationship issues).

One of the things I've been thinking about lately is my vitamin D levels 
because lately my bones have ached more than usual and on top of that my increase in fatigue. 
And I know that is not a good sign and it's been downright hard to get back into working out, but I also know I am not alone ( I know your reading this chikas, yes you and no I am not pregnant). 


If you haven't caught on by now, According to Volgman " there's been an epidemic of vitamin D over the last few decades because we've been avoiding the sun."  But,  I know I don't avoid the sun at all, I mean I love being in the sun any opportunity I get ( I mean I use to be an triathlete for god sakes), but maybe I am not getting the same dose as I use to get. 

And then, for some people, their digestive tract cannot absorb vitamin D well. For others, the kidneys have trouble converting the nutrient to its active form. And being overweight makes vitamin D less available for use in the body. Whatever the reason, to little of this essential vitamin can sap your bone strength, and some research links a deficiency of vitamin D to chronic fatigue syndrome (webMD).

Scary! I hope that is not what I (or you) are going through.
So, what should we do? Well for starters you can make an appointment with 
your primary doctor and discuss your sign and symptoms. Perhaps your provider
can order lab analysis to check your blood levels. Secondly, it's time to start 
considering taking a vitamin D daily supplement. 

I recently purchased  the Leader Vitamin D natural flavor chewable tablets.
It's a dietary supplement that will help promote bone, immune, breast and colon health.
One table a day will help get you the right amount you need.
So next time your thinking, no I am good, perhaps it's time to start taking your vitamin D.















Self-Care Tips

A couple weeks ago I took a trip to Psalm Springs with my husband to get away from the city life and enjoy a weekend in the desert. We needed a break from our Monday through Friday work routine because we were sleep deprived, stressed and tired all the time. So, we planned a 3 day weekend trip to Doubletree by Hilton Hotel and Jordan came along too!!

I guess you can say this was a small family retreat considering Jordan enjoyed every moment as much as we did because she was all smiles. The hotel is pet friendly, so that was a nice perk! Also, if you take your dog, you're only allowed to reside on the first floor. However, that was an advantage for us because we got a room near the pool with and our own private fire pit place outside.

One of the great advantages about the self-care trip to Palm Springs was to dive right into relaxation the first day, but I also took the time to discover what I needed for myself.
So, I created  "An absolute no list", where knowing what I want was just as important as knowing what I don't want. And it so happen that I wanted some  "Me Time!". So of course I took advantage of booking a day at the Omni Resort Spa, so my husband and I would enjoy individual spa sessions. I know practicing self-care can sometimes feel guilty, but it becomes more natural and automatic when you know your taking care of one another by allowing yourself to pay more attention to your needs. So remember to squeeze a little "Me Time" every now and then. Keep in mind, "Extreme self-care takes practice". ~ Cheryl Richardson.



Cocktail Hour with Susan G. Komen San Diego

Hola Hola!!! We are halfway through the week, so let's keep going to complete our goals. With that said chicas, I want to share an awesome experience I had with Susan G. Komen San Diego. First and foremost, I like to give thanks to Suzy Garcia, Director of Scatena Daniels Communications for allowing an opportunity to explore the cocktail hour for Screens, Genes and The Decision We Make event.

Are you ready to learn what the cocktail hour was all about? Bueno, eating and drinking of course! Pero no te creas que fue asi, in all seriousness it was an opportunity to learn about the many faces that stand behind Susan G. Komen's mission. And that's everyone from advocates, educators, patient navigators, case managers, survivors, local community members far and near, mayors, doctors, sponsors, donors, clinics and hospitals. Mujeres, we have a team of experts standing behind us every step of the way, so don't let your fear prevent you from getting screened today, tomorrow or the next day. When you are ready, so is the community.

Okay, chicas, now that I have your attention, I am going to give you a quick inside look at the mammogram mobile unit. The floor plan inside is modern, organized and clean. Once you set foot inside you will find a small registration area to the right and then to the left there is a small sitting area with a vital sign machine. Further down the unit is a small hall way and a cute small changing room to prepare yourself for the exam.





In the back of the mobile unit is the mammogram machine, a technician station and a small area to lay down for a breast exam. Once the provider is done with the breast exam, the technician will then walk you over to the mammogram machine to start the screening process. As you can see, I took a brief moment to lay down and experience what women feel as they are mentally preparing themselves for the exam and your probably wondering why?

Well that's because I know all to well how it feels to be in your shoes. At the age of 26, I had my first ultrasound of my right breast which then resulted in getting my first bilateral diagnostic mammogram. Obviously there was an area of suspicion, but I am thankful that everything came out benign (normal). The most important lesson learned in my experience and as a Latina was conquering my fear of the unknown, but also placing the example to my fellow Latinas que no estan solas! 



After a great tour, I walked over to the bar with Kelly to try the pink cocktail, there we sipped and mingled. And little did I know.... I was going to run into Ambrocia Lopez, Director of Mission Programs, Susan G. Komen Orange County . Ambrocia and I go way back ladies, we met when I was finishing up my internship at Komen. She and I along with great volunteers worked tirelessly on weekends to create an awareness along in our great Latino communities in Santa Ana. As a matter fact, Komen was the place where my passion for women's health began and since then I've been involved in the health care field in a variety of roles. Also, Ambrocia and I are looking forward to bringing a cafecito hour interview on La Saludable Latina podcast to share the trends and efforts that have been succeeding with our Latinas.

Thanks to my photographer Kelly Wallace for capturing the moments and accompanying me to the event. Not only did we capture the experience, but we met two special survivors that day, Wendy Shurelds and Barb Whatley. I can go on and on about their stories, but I am personally going to save that for another time because I believe inviting them to the podcast will have a greater impact.
